Fifty years ago, a boy was born into a very poor family in China. His parents had almost nothing. Low income, few options, no safety net. But they worked, and they believed in one thing above all else: that education could change everything.
Today, that boy is a father. And his ten-year-old daughter has travelled to sixteen countries.
This Father’s Day, we are telling Angel Chen’s story, but not the part you might expect. Not the crowns, not the magazine covers, not the runways. We are telling the story of the man standing just outside the frame. The father whose slow, steady and decades-long journey made all of it possible.

A Journey That Began With Nothing
Angel’s father does not tell his story for sympathy. He tells it as a map, so his children know exactly where they came from, and exactly how far one generation can travel when it refuses to give up.
He grew up watching his own parents work tirelessly on a very low income, sacrificing everything to put him and his brother through school. That sacrifice became the foundation of his entire life. In 1990, it paid off in a way that changed his family’s trajectory forever: he was accepted into a university in the United States on a full scholarship.
He went on to complete his higher education and earn a Master’s Degree in Business Administration. After graduation, he worked just as hard as his parents had โ trying many different businesses, failing, adjusting, trying again โ until he finally achieved the financial success that now allows him to give his family a wonderful life.
My generation is more lucky than my parents’ generation. I believe my kids’ generation will be way better than mine โ because of so many new opportunities. By providing the correct education and full support, I believe my kids will do so much better in their lives.

What the Research Says About Fathers and Daughters
There is something deeply powerful about this particular father-daughter bond, and the science backs it up. A 2025 meta-analysis published in Social Development, drawing on 65 separate studies and data from more than 154,000 children worldwide, found that a father’s positive involvement, warmth, and responsiveness significantly shape a child’s social and emotional development. Most striking of all: the researchers found these effects were strongest between fathers and daughters, among older fathers, and within Asian families. In other words, the exact dynamic at the heart of Angel’s story is the one the data identifies as the most powerful of all.

The Legacy He Is Passing Down
Ask Angel’s father what he most wants his daughter to carry forward, and he does not mention trophies or titles. He mentions three words, the same three words he repeats to all his children, the family legacy he hopes will outlast him.
I want my child to be brave, courageous and kind. These will help her develop a positive attitude to her life which eventually will lead her to success.
โ Angel’s Father
He encourages Angel to try everything โ new sports, new classes, new foods, new cultures, new places. He believes a child’s world should be, in his words, multi-coloured and full of potential. And he believes that the challenges that come with new opportunities are not obstacles, but the very things that build a confident, capable adult.
Above everything, he wants Angel to know one thing: that her parents are always there to support her, no matter what happens. That the value of family is something to treasure and one day, to pass on to the children of her own.
The Daughter That Love Built
And so we arrive, finally, at Angel herself – because everything she has become is the fruit of that fifty-year journey.
At ten years old, Angel Chen has been crowned Little Miss West Coast 2024 and Little Miss California 2024, and placed 1st Runner-Up at the National Pageant 2024. She has graced a magazine cover. She walks in kids’ fashion shows throughout the year. She fences, dances, acts, and paints. And as her father hoped, she has seen the world, sixteen countries and more than thirty cities, from the Maldives to Santorini.

But the detail that matters most is not on any list of accolades. It is this: Angel was shy once. Reserved. Unsure. And through the opportunities her father worked a lifetime to provide: the classes, the travel, the encouragement to be brave, she became confident. She became herself.

This Father’s Day
It is easy, when we celebrate a child’s success, to see only the child. The crown. The cover. The confidence. But behind almost every shining child is someone who carried something heavy for years so that their child would never have to.
Angel’s father crossed an ocean with nothing but a scholarship and a belief. He built a life from the ground up. And he did it all with one goal – that his daughter’s world would be bigger, brighter, and braver than his own beginning ever was.
This Father’s Day, we honour him- and every father whose unseen sacrifice becomes the foundation a child gets to stand on.
A Note From Iconic Glam Kids
At Iconic Glam Kids, we believe every child is an icon in a parent’s eyes. Angel’s story reminds us that behind every crown is a story of love that began long before the child was even born – in the hopes, the sacrifices, and the quiet determination of a parent who decided the next generation would have more. To Angel’s father, and to fathers everywhere: thank you. Happy Father’s Day.
