Speaking with adults, a large majority can recall Christmas memories more easily and with more fondness. Most of the adults I know could tell me about at least one Christmas memory they hold close to their hearts. Additionally, many families are building traditions with their children based on their favorite Christmas experiences during childhood. One of the major contributors to these memory-making family moments is holiday movies and books.

Just spending time together watching a movie or reading a book will help you achieve this holiday magic. However, there are some movies and books that have proven to be extraordinarily impactful, be it from being memorable, hilarious, classic, touching, or just incredibly entertaining.
I have spent a lot of time researching, polling, and pulling from personal experience to create this brief guide to help you choose some of the most impactful movies and books. It also includes some of our cultureโs more beloved and timeless works, as there are just some stories everyone should have the opportunity to hear.
Letโs start with books and remember that the benefits of reading with your children are endless. Letโs create some amazing Christmas memories from this important learning and bonding time.
Childrenโs Christmas Books

I have developed several book lists for you to help you pick some excellent, entertaining, and impactful books to read with your children during the holidays. I found evaluating books to be even more difficult than creating recommendations for movies.
It turns out books are not reviewed and rated to the same degree as movies.
I created this list utilizing a variety of sites dedicated to books, as well as the most popular and purchased mentioned by Amazon and Barnes & Noble.
I scored the books on a scale of 0 to 10 using the following criteria: entertainment value, popularity, meaning/lesson, illustrations, and age range. Without further delay, here are my top ten (in no particular order) classic and modern Childrenโs Christmas books, as well as recommended books for very young children, Christian books, and new releases.
Authorโs Favorite:
Classics: Polar Express
Modern: How to Catch an Elf
Young Ones: Pete the Catโs 12 Groovy Days of Christmas
Christian: J is for Jesus
New: 5 More Sleeps Until Christmas
Childrenโs and Family Christmas Movies
I have evaluated many, many Christmas movies. Of course, no list can truly be comprehensive and void personal opinion. That being said, I graded as many appropriate movies as I could find and gave them a rating of 0-10.
I did this using well-known rating sites, such as Rotten Tomatoes and IMDb. I also read multiple reviews for each movie to provide it with a grade based on Entertainment Value, Quality, Christmas Spirit/Feel Good, Lesson/Message, and Scare/Crude Content Potential.
I have noted the films that were cited as having the possibility of scaring children or the potential for parents finding the content inappropriate.
Here they are in orderโthe top 10 childrenโs and family Christmas movies using the above-mentioned system.
Movies mentioned as having Scare or Crude Potential: The Grinch Who Stole Christmas, Home Alone, Polar Express, Dr. Suessโ Grinch, Unaccompanied Minors, Naughty Nine, Jingle All the Way, Family Switch
Authorโs Picks
Childrenโs: Home Alone
Family: Fred Claus
Young Children: Trolls Holiday
Classics: Santa Claus is Coming to Town

Including book and movies in your holiday traditions can be a wonderful way to create lasting memories and opportunities for family bonding. Whatever you do this Christmas, I hope you do it together and enjoy each other! Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays.
