This May, we are honoring the mothers who came to motherhood through paths most do not write about. What follows is a foster to adoption story, told the way it actually unfolded.
Allan Harris is well-traveled, homeschooled, and unmistakably his motherโs son. He helps. He notices. He shows up for other people the way children do when they have always felt fully seen.

His mother first met him when he was nine months old, a foster placement carrying a small bag and an uncertain story. Two years later, the call came that he could be adopted. She did not need a moment to think.
Allanโs story is for the mothers, the Motherโs Day cards forget.
The Question Every Foster To Adoption Story Eventually Reaches
That decisiveness, when it came, was easy. The two years before it were the work. The bottle feeds. The pediatrician visits. The first cold. The first laugh. The morning his eyes searched for her, and she answered.
By that time, he had already been with me for two years, so there was truly nothing to think about. My heart already knew the answer. – Allan’s mom reflects
This is the part of foster care most people miss. You commit to a child you do not yet know you will get to keep. You learn his face anyway. You learn his cry anyway. You build a life around him anyway. And when, two years in, you are finally told he is yours, the only word the answer can be is yes. Because the work was already done. The strength was the two years.
That sentence is the entire story. Long before any paperwork was filed, the family had already formed itself around him. The legal piece was a confirmation of what had already happened in the bedtime routines, the doctor visits, the mornings where he reached for her first.
In January 2022, the adoption was finalized.

What This Foster To Adoption Story Looks Like Now
Allan and his mother travel often. The beach is a favorite. They take a shoot a year, sometimes more, building a visual record of their life as a family that chose itself.
He is homeschooled, which means his days unfold differently than most. There is space to slow down on what interests him. There is room to bring his mother into his learning rather than handing it off to a building.
Asked which character he would be, Allan does not pick a hero by superpower. He picks one by purpose.

For The Parents Reading This
If you are a foster parent waiting on a decision, this story is for you.
If you are an adoptive parent who has been told your bond โcounts lessโ because you are not biological, this story is for you.
If you are a parent who came to motherhood through any path other than the one the cards describe, this story is for you.
Love does not need biology to be real. It needs a daily bedtime, a shared breakfast, a heart that already knows. You are not less of a parent because the road was different. You are more, because you chose.
Behind Every โForeverโ Is A Family
Allanโs mother began her motherhood not in a delivery room but in a phone call from a placement agency. She showed up anyway. She learned him anyway. She became his anyway.
Two years before the courts caught up to what was already true, she had already decided.
That is what makes this a story worth telling. Not the adoption date. The two years before it.
